Yes, we use lye to make bar soaps and shampoos.  That's how all bar soaps is made.   Its not going to hurt you.  Here's why:

Handmade soap, cold-process soap, hot-process soap are all terms used to describe the method of making soap from scratch by using various oils and/or fats, some form of liquid and a chemical called "lye" or sodium hydroxide or NaOH. What many don't know, is that ALL bar soaps are created with lye.

Unfortunately, soap doesn't fall under the same FDA guidelines as other body products or "cosmetics" and are not required to list any of the ingredients used to make it. Most commercial soaps have no listing what so ever of any of the ingredients used to make the bar soap.

Many people when they see that lye is a very caustic and potentially dangerous chemical get leery about buying the product that lists it. However, as I said before, every bar of soap one uses was created with sodium hydroxide.

When creating soap, the sodium hydroxide is mixed with water and is then mixed with the oils. Once poured into the molds, the mixture goes through what is called "saponification". This is where the chemical reaction between the lye, water and oils heats up and changes to soap. During this process and through the drying or "curing" process, the lye is burned off and is no longer present in the soap. If you happen to accidentally use a batch of soap with lye still in it, you will know as it will burn your skin. Manufacturers of soap do not include the sodium hydroxide, or lye, as an ingredient since it is no longer present in the final product.
